4 Tips For Making The Most Of Your Time On Campus

When it comes to making the most of college, you need to be sure that you learn to get the most out of dorm life. No matter what college or university you attend, the tips below will be useful to you and will help you get through four years of on campus student housing. Take advantage of these guidelines so that you are able make the most of your housing situation.

Tip #1: Find Some Creative Ways Of Managing Your Space

The number one rule about dorm rooms is that you will typically have limited space, which means that you need to find the best ways to manage it. The first thing you should plan to do is explore vertical space. You can use book shelves and stackable crates in order to get the most of your space. You can also raise your bed so that the entire space up under it can be used for anything for a seating area to a storage space.

Tip #2: Explore Some Areas Outside Of Your Dorm Room For "Me" Time And Privacy

If you have a roommate, you will need to become comfortable with seeking privacy and respecting the privacy of your roommate. For your dorm to be a comfortable and cozy space, you must find some go-to places on campus, so that you are not always in your dorm room. Consider some areas of the library, coffee shops, cafes and other areas that will be useful in allowing you to branch out and enjoy yourself, so that your dorm room never gets old.

Tip #3: Be Wise About Your Roommate Assignment

If you want to get the most of your time on campus, you should also be mindful about your roommate assignment. Request a survey from your housing office so that you can be matched with someone who has similar or matching interests. One of the cardinal sins of campus life that people commit is to room with one of their close friends. While this sounds like a good idea on paper, many people end up losing friendships as a result.

Tip #4: Become Familiar With The Resident Assistant And Residence Life Advisor

Once you have a dorm assignment, you need to immediately learn the name and contact information of your resident assistant and the residence life advisor. This will let you know who to go to if you have questions, need to resolve an issue or if you have an emergency. This person will be valuable to you throughout your time on campus.
